CSO aims to secure lasting improvements to the health of the people in Scotland, and improve the quality and cost-effectiveness of health services and healthcare in Scotland.
CSO supports research initiated by the research community in Scotland and advises the Scottish Government Health Directorates on how research contributes to improvements in health and healthcare.
In 2009-10 CSO invested £65.5 million in NHS related research. Its main activities are:

| offering research training initiatives so improving the R&D skills base and fuelling the development of evidence-based practice. | |
| building a research strategy for NHSScotland. | |

| promoting dissemination and implementation of research findings | |
| commissioning research in areas of particular importance | |
| promoting a strong evidence base for primary care | |
| encouraging strong research ethics appraisal and research governance | |
| supporting a number of research units across Scotland | |
| participating in a number of Scottish and UK wide research initiatives | |
| encouraging multidisciplinary, collaborative research | |
| including public representation in our decision making processes |
