CSO standing committees

See Announcement on 21/12/11

CSO has 3 standing committees, two to advise on research grant applications, in experimental and translational medicine research (ETMRC) or health services and population health research (HSPRC), and the Chief Scientist Committee which is a high level strategic advisory committee.

The composition of the Research Advisory committees is vital and CSO wishes to ensure that each has good coverage in terms of its expertise by topic/subject, discipline, and research methods. Each committee has between 12-20 members, including lay members, who serve fixed terms The committee consider applications for project (and programme) funding, applications for supplementary funding, and they also assess the final reports of funded studies. The workload is variable, but on average there are 25 applications considered at each committee meeting.

We also have two panels which meet to discuss applications for CSO Fellowships in Health Services and Public Health Research and for applications for Clinical Academic Training Fellowships. The panels meet twice a year (once to shortlist candidates and once to interview).

Committee/panel membership is continuously reviewed in order to ensure that the committees are fit for purpose. If you are interested in becoming involved in CSO's work we would like to hear from you. Please email a CV and a covering letter to Kenny McLeod (Kenny.McLeodNOSPAM@scotland.gsi.gov.uk - remove NOSPAM) which sets out your particular expertise in terms of subject areas, discipline and research methods, any relevant experience gained from other committees etc and we will keep your details on file for consideration as places become available. Final decisions on membership are taken by CSO, in consultation with Committee chairs. A Code of Conduct exists for both committee and panel members.
