NRS Career Research Fellowships - Following a competitive process, 34 clinicians have been awarded NRS Career Research Fellowships to commence in April 2012 and run for 3 years. For more information see the Press Release and list of successful Fellows.
UK Biobank opened for use by researchers on 30th March. The resource contains more than 1,000 separate pieces of information on volunteers who were aged 40-69 when they joined the project. More information on the resource and how to access it can be found on the UK Biobank website along with a Data Showcase that summarises some of the data collected.
NIHR Public Health Research Programme - The PHR programme has announced a commissioned call for proposals in the areas of studies using existing data (deadline 17 July 2012), using peer support to prevent illicit drug uptake and use in young people and interventions to aid return to work after long term sickness absence (deadline 5 September 2012). There is also an open call for the Researcher-led workstream with a deadine of 30 July 2012. For more information see the PHR Programme website.
Research provisions of the Adults with Incapacity (Scotland) Act 2000 - Scottish Ministers propose amending S51 of the Adults With Incapacity (Scotland) Act 2000 to allow the research provisions for incapacitated adults in clinical trials of investigational medicinal products (CTIMPs) to be extended so that research can go ahead with the consent of the patient's doctor and in urgent situations for non-CTIMPs. Responses to this proposal, which is detailed in the consultation document, are invited until Friday 8th June 2012.
Health Secretary announces Strategic Alliance and Innovation Fund - An Innovation Fund which will invest £600,000 over the next three years to help support life sciences development, was recently announced, along with the exciting news of Strategic Alliance between NRS (NHS Research Scotland) and PPD (one of the largest clinical research organisations in the world). NIHR Health Services and Delivery Research programme - The NIHR Health Services and Delivery Research programme replaces the former Health Services Research and Service Delivery and Organisation programmes from January 2012. It is funded by the NIHR, with specific contributions from the CSO in Scotland and NISCHR in Wales. Researchers in Scotland may apply to the Health Services Research work stream of the new programme but are not eligible to respond to the Healthcare Delivery Research work stream and should contact Peter Craig at CSO to discuss funding opportunities for HDR type research.
