Europe PubMed Central

Europe PMC (originally UKPMC) was first launched in 2007 with the aim of providing a stable, permanent and free-to-access online digital archive of full-text, peer-reviewed research publications arising from research funded by the Funders Group in addition to those in open access journals.  Following the joining of UKPMC by the European Research Council in mid-2012, the system has been rebranded as Europe PMC.

The system was based on PubMed Central (PMC) – the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) free digital archive of biomedical and life sciences journal literature.  An initial development involved implementing a manuscript submission system – MSS – to enable UK researchers to submit their research papers for inclusion in UKPMC. For more information and to access the MSS see Europe PMC Plus.

Europe PMC is part of a network of PMC International (PMCI) repositories. PMCI is a collaborative effort between the US National Library of Medicine (NLM), the publishers whose journal content makes up the PMC archive, and organisations in other countries that share NLM’s interest in archiving life sciences literature. The long-term goal of PMCI is to create a network of digital archives that can share some or all of their respective locally deposited content with others in the network.

CSO has an open access policy that requires the papers arising from the research we fund to be freely available , and to be deposited with Europe PMC at the time of publication.
