NIHR Invasive lobular carcinoma (lobular breast cancer) highlight notice

The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) is inviting applications for high-quality research focused on Invasive Lobular Carcinoma (ILC), also known as lobular breast cancer. Particular interest is placed on studies that improve understanding of the detection, diagnosis, treatment, follow-up, and ongoing care of people affected by this disease.

This funding opportunity aims to support research that generates evidence to inform clinical practice, improve patient outcomes and experiences, and contribute to more effective and sustainable healthcare services.

Background

Invasive lobular carcinoma is the second most common type of breast cancer, accounting for approximately 15% of all breast cancer diagnoses in the UK. Despite its prevalence, significant gaps remain in understanding the biology of the disease and how best to diagnose, monitor, and treat it. Due to its distinct characteristics, ILC presents challenges that may not be fully addressed by approaches developed for other breast cancer subtypes, highlighting the need for dedicated research in this area.

Areas of Interest

Applications are encouraged from researchers seeking to advance knowledge and improve outcomes for people living with ILC. Relevant topics may include:

  • Detection and diagnosis of ILC, including the development and evaluation of imaging approaches.
  • Therapeutic interventions, surgical techniques, and treatment strategies specifically relevant to ILC.
  • Longer-term monitoring and surveillance, including the use of liquid biopsy and other biomarker technologies.
  • Quality of life, supportive care, rehabilitation, and wider services for people living with ILC.
  • Research that builds on existing evidence, collaborations, and networks to improve treatment pathways and patient care.

This list is not exhaustive, and applications addressing other important aspects of ILC research will also be considered where they align with the remit of the relevant funding programme.

Who Can Apply?

Applications are welcomed from multidisciplinary teams and professionals involved in the diagnosis, treatment, follow-up, rehabilitation, and support of people affected by ILC. The NIHR particularly encourages involvement from under-represented disciplines, including allied health professionals, nurses, and mental health practitioners working across care, support, and rehabilitation settings.

How to Apply

The highlight notice is open across NIHR funding programmes. Applicants should ensure that their proposal aligns with the scope and remit of the programme to which they are applying and review all relevant guidance before submission.
