Catalytic Research Grants Scheme

This Scheme is now closed – no applications will be accepted

Up to £35,000 (for direct costs only) is available for short projects to provide key supporting evidence to underpin already well formulated plans for subsequent applications to other research funders i.e. to address a specific key area of uncertainty, potentially de-risking the application to the other funder. The scheme is not to support studies that are essentially only exploratory in nature or to develop new interventions, and the scheme cannot be used to support work involving medical treatments or procedures on patients – e.g. sample collection, medical investigations, diagnostic tests, application of medicines or devices.  Subsequent applications must be for applied/translational health research (i.e. within the remit of the two CSO research committees ) and be relevant to, and have the potential for significant impact on, health in Scotland.  Applications to this scheme for work to support grant proposals for subsequent submission to CSO research committees will not be accepted.

Applicants to the  grant scheme should submit a completed application form through their local University Research Office or NHS R&D office as appropriate. Further guidance is provided on the form. There is no application deadline. We aim to provide funding decisions within one month of submission. The standard terms and conditions of grants are below.

Queries relating to applications to this scheme should be directed to Tom Barlow (if in the area of health improvement, protection or services research) or Alan Mcnair (if in the area of clinical or biomedical research).
