New Volunteer REC Members Wanted for the East of Scotland Research Ethics Service

People from all backgrounds and walks of life with an interest in health research and ethics are encouraged to apply to become a volunteer REC member – clinical and lay perspectives are equally valued; and both are vital to safeguarding the wellbeing of research participants.

Clinical research represents a vital process through which we can develop and identify medicines or treatments that are both safe and effective. It is something that impacts all of us.

However, regardless of the condition a particular study is aiming to treat, it must be ensured that the wellbeing, safety and dignity of people volunteering to participate in research are protected at all times. In other words, it must be ensured that the clinical research process is conducted in an ethical manner.

Throughout the UK, including in Scotland, this role falls to Research Ethics Committees (RECs). These RECs are composed of volunteer members who possess a blend of clinical and lay expertise and knowledge, and are responsible for reviewing all clinical research proposals involving NHS patients.

REC volunteer members are involved in decision-making processes at the forefront of pioneering health and social care research, helping to review research that aims to provide evidence for improving or changing practice for some of the biggest challenges in health and social care, including cancer, dementia and COVID-19. Effective REC members will have a balanced, decisive and analytical mind complemented by strong communication skills. Successful applicants will also receive ongoing training and support to build on their existing skills whilst developing new ones.
